Seen On Slash Bookmarklet

Submitted by phil on June 26, 2006 - 3:05pm.

To go along with the new comment submission box (login if you don't know what I'm talking about), we whipped together this javascript bookmarklet to let you submit to Seen On Slash directly from a /. comment page.

Click and drag the following link to your links toolbar.

Post to SeenOnSlash

This is compatible with most web browsers and platforms as long as your bookmarks or favorites allow javascript. The links toolbar may not be visible in all setups and in most browsers, you can enable it in the View->Toolbars menu of your web browser. You can also put it in your bookmarks instead of the links toolbar.

For users of up-to-date IE browsers, the clicking and dragging of links that contain javascript is no longer supported. To add this to your IE links toolbar, click the link with your right mouse button and select "Add to Favorites..." from the menu. Click OK if a security warning alert pops-up (this shows up since the link contains javscript). If a list of folders is not shown, click the "Create in >>>" button. Now select the folder called "Links" and then click OK. You should now see SeenOnSlash on your links toolbar, if not, see the last paragraph above.

The javascript for this is the relatively straightforward:

javascript:void(location.href='http://seenonslash.com/fetch_comment.php?src='+encodeURIComponent(location.href));

favicon

Can I suggest that Seen on Slash gets its own favicon thingy. The default Drupal icon is acceptable for a bookmark I guess, but for a quick-link like this (the favicon shows up as the icon for the tool bar link in Opera) there should be a discernible and different icon.

I hadn't thought about the favicon in relation to the bookmarket. I've put a lot of thought into a Seen on Slash logo but can't come up with anything good. If I had a good logo I'd make a favicon version.

Any suggestions for a logo? Or where to go for ideas? A few sites sell cheap ones, but they're pretty lame, especially for a site like this.

It doesn't seem to be working anymore...

Conditionally

It's working. The only situation where it doesn't work the first time is when you haven't visited the site in a while. The quirky way the system keeps people logged in causes the form to be empty, but hitting the back button bounces you back to the form populated correctly. I haven't figured out a way around this yet...
