So an upgrade of PHP from 5.0 from 5.2 should be smooth and simple, right? Well, it might be, if you happen to know you need to switch to a different mysql driver. I browse the PHP change log between minor version updates. I just didn't happen to notice the most important morsel of information. Instead of using the "mysql" driver everyone who queries MySQL now has to switch to "mysqli". I wouldn't care if this was changed behind the scenes. But all database function names have to be switched. It's an easy search and replace, plus with our software package wrapping the database calls it was one line of code to change. But it's the principle of the thing. There was no need from the perspective of PHP users. The developers of PHP just don't seem to care when they make their users jump through hoops for nothing. Thank you for everyone's patience while logins were unintentionally suspended. A big thanks to phil for spending hours tracking down the issue with his own site, Bubblehouse.org, and sharing this info with me. Submitted by veridicus on November 20, 2006 - 12:23pm.

I'm very sorry for the outage. Our hosting provider chose to spend hours (at least 4) doing daytime maintenance with no notification whatsoever. They switched our disk volume to read-only. I'm going to try to code around the part of Seen on Slash that requires disk writes so at least the site is readable the next time this happens. Plus I'll be looking for another hosing provider. After the basics are covered customer service is very important. Submitted by veridicus on July 18, 2006 - 8:31am.

Our search index was completely updated this morning. It was cleared after our software upgrade yesterday. The algorithm is much improved and there are now many more search options. I was thinking of integrating the Google site search but having a tweakable custom search with more options is far better. Enjoy! Submitted by veridicus on May 18, 2006 - 3:14pm.

Sorry for the down time. Recently I've had database problems with my shared hosting. I believe someone is abusing my shared database server. But then I also found a table from another site of mine grew over 100 megs overnight. So anyway, Seen On Slash is on another database server and performing well. Thanks for your patience. |
